Colorado Gov. Jared Polis backed a woman’s right to abortion, calling it a “gut-wrenching” decision that should be trusted to women.
“I believe there’s a lot of common ground on lowering unnecessary births by enabling women and men to use birth control and really developing a culture of responsibility about what it means to be a parent,” said Democrat Jared Polis.
According to the leak of a draft Supreme Court ruling, justices are likely to reverse decades of precedent that recognizes abortion access as part of the constitutional right to privacy. Protests erupted across the country in response to states implementing abortion bans. Last month, Colorado upheld a woman’s “fundamental right” to abortion, contraception, and other reproductive health care rights.
“Every day, people face heartbreaking decisions, whether it’s rape or incest, frequently having to choose between the lives of the mother and child,” Polis told FNS presenter Shannon Bream. olis went on to say that it was “just unacceptable” for the government to intervene in dialogues between women and their physicians or spiritual leaders.
Colorado will also not seek to prohibit third-trimester abortions after voters “overwhelmingly” rejected the bill on the ballot a year and a half ago, according to Polis.
“You may be nearing birth and discover that your child lacks lungs and will not survive more than a few minutes outside the womb,” Polis stated. “This is a particularly challenging situation for women.
“Of course, the correct approach is to ensure that we trust individuals to make that decision and that they have the freedom to do so.” We don’t suggest the government will step in and tell people how to do anything.”
Polis also commented on the protests outside the houses of the five Supreme Court justices who backed the likely majority ruling to leave abortion rights decisions to the states, saying he doesn’t believe they are “very useful in convincing judges. “[The demonstrations] may further alienate them from a specific cause to be so confrontational,” Polis said, adding that he thought the justices were “the epitome of our greatest and best judges” who were “extremely intelligent.”
