The passenger with no flying experience who safely landed a Cessna 208 Caravan with the aid of Air Traffic Control in Florida on Tuesday afternoon has been recognized. According to WFLA, Darren Harrison of Lakeland, Florida, was the passenger who successfully landed the jet at Palm Beach International Airport. The Cessna 208 Caravan was returning from the Bahamas. On Tuesday afternoon, Harrison informed Air Traffic Control of a “severe problem” when the plane’s captain became disoriented.

While the Air Traffic Controller searched for the jet, Harrison was instructed to “keep the wings level and try to follow the coast, either north or southerly.” After four minutes, the passenger asked the Air Traffic Controller if they had spotted his jet. “Have you discovered me yet?” Harrison inquired. “I can’t even get my navigation screen to work. It has all of the information. Do you have any suggestions?”

The jet was eventually located off the coast of Boca Raton by Air Traffic Control. Palm Beach International Airport’s Air Traffic Control took control in order to better communicate with Harrison and help him through the landing. Robert Morgan, a 20-year-experienced air traffic controller, took over and assisted Harrison in landing.

“Congratulations to the new pilot,” one controller remarked after Harrison landed.

“You just saw a couple of people land that plane,” a controller stated over the radio to the other pilots. “Did you say the passengers landed the plane?” asked one commercial pilot. “Oh, my goodness. Excellent work.” Morgan claimed in a video published by the FAA that he felt like he was in a movie. “That’s never happened before,” Morgan added. “I felt as if I were in a movie.”

According to reports, the pilot was transferred to a nearby hospital and his health is improving.
