‘Democracy is under attack,’ says Garland in his Harvard lecture

Attorney General Merrick Garland urged Harvard University’s graduating class to enter public service in order to confront the country’s continuing upheaval, claiming that “democracy is under attack.”

Garland talked to the university’s graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 on Sunday about how he observed individuals willing to help in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

“Earlier in my career, I spent weeks in Oklahoma City investigating a federal building explosion,” Garland explained. “I witnessed – and felt – how powerful a volunteer outpouring of services might be.” Oklahomans waited in line to provide care and comfort to those in need — survivors and first responders, friends and strangers alike.”

“However, it should not take a tragedy to motivate us to search for ways to support people in need on a daily basis,” Garland continued.

“There is one specific reason why my appeal to public duty is so vital for your generation.” “It’s an urgency that should move all of you, regardless of your job,” Garland added. “There is a pressing urgency to safeguard democracy.”
