According to two European diplomatic sources, Alina Kabaeva, a lady closely tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is included in the sixth planned package of European Union penalties against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

At this stage, names can be removed or added at the discretion of member states, and this is anticipated to be a topic of negotiation when any fresh sanctions package is offered, according to an EU Commission source.
The EU has not yet formally approved the proposed plan.
“There are ongoing discussions. It’s not going to be easy, but we’ll have to wait and see “On Friday morning, one of the diplomatic sources told CNN.

CNN has requested comment on the potential penalties from Russia’s National Media Group, which Kabaeva leads.

Kabaeva, who was born in 1983, was initially linked to Putin when she was a medal-winning gymnast more than a decade ago. Putin, who is divorced, has denied having an affair with her.
The Wall Street Journal reported in April that US officials were contemplating whether or not to penalise Kabaeva, with fears that such an action would exacerbate relations further because it would be a severe personal blow to Putin.

According to two people who have seen the entire documents, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, is also among those named in the planned sixth wave of EU penalties.
The planned penalties are “absurd,” according to Russian Orthodox Church spokesperson Vladimir Legoida, according to Russian official news agency TASS.

“The more indiscriminate (these) sanctions become, the more they lose touch with common sense and the more difficult it becomes to achieve peace, which is what the Russian Orthodox Church prays for at every service with His Holiness the Patriarch’s blessing,” Legoida wrote in a Telegram message.

“Only those who are absolutely ignorant of our Church’s history can attempt to scare its clergy and believers by assembling such lists,” Legoida remarked.

Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, the EU has increased its economic pressure on Russia. Most recently, the EU suggested a ban on Russian oil imports, which would have a significant impact on Russia’s economy; however, Hungary, an EU member with strong ties to Putin, is likely to scuttle any such plans.

Kabaeva and Putin allegedly met when she was a teenage gymnast who won many gold in domestic, European, and Olympic events. At the 2004 Athens Games, she won a gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics.
