Two federal charges have been filed against the alleged Brooklyn subway shooter.

Frank James, the man suspected of opening fire on a subway in Brooklyn last month, has been charged with two federal offenses. James was charged with one count of terrorist attacks and other violence against a mass transit system, as well as one count of firing a firearm during a crime of violence, according to an indictment filed Friday.

Ten individuals were killed and 19 others were injured in the horrific shooting. According to authorities, the suspect put on a gas mask pulled out a gas canister and fired at least 33 shots. The day following the incident, James was arrested. No information about probable motivation has been given.

James, who has a long criminal record, was linked to YouTube videos discussing violence and mass massacres. Many of the videos James posted had threats of violence, directed towards a specific group of people he claimed had insulted him as well as larger social and ethnic groupings he professed to despise.

He challenged a plan by New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ administration to address safety and homelessness in the subway, in part through an increased presence of mental health specialists, in a video released online in February.
James, who is Black, stated the new endeavor was “doomed to fail” in that racist and rambling audio, and recalled his own terrible experience with municipal health personnel during a prior “mental health crisis.”

James used sexist and racist words to rage about church abuse and workplace bigotry. He constantly expressed hatred towards African Americans in his films. James may face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted on federal charges.
