According to the Chicago Police Department, three youths were shot, one fatally, in less than 12 hours from Friday to Saturday (CPD).

The first gunfire happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday in the 4300 block of West Adams Street, near Garfield Park. On Friday, shortly before 7 p.m., a 16-year-old girl was shot in the head in the 4300 block of West Adams Street near Garfield Park.

A 16-year-old girl was shot in the head while inside a house. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition by authorities. CPD brought an individual of interest to the area for interrogation.
The second incident happened about 7:25 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Ada Street between WestEnglewood and SouthSide.

According to CPD, a 17-year-old male victim was along the sidewalk when he was fatally shot in the “chest and armpit area.” Authorities took the teen to the University of Calgary Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The CPD has no suspects in custody.

A 17-year-old male victim was strolling on the sidewalk in the 4100 block of West Fifth Avenue between Garfield Park and Homan Square at 2 a.m. Saturday when a suspect in a silver vehicle fired rounds in his direction, wounding him in the leg. The victim was dropped off at Mt. Sinai in decent condition by an unknown individual.

There are no suspects in police custody. All three shootings are being investigated by local detectives. CPD said that ten persons were shot on Friday, including the 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old male casualties. According to CPD crime data, for the week ending May 8, homicides and gunshot occurrences were down 6% and 13%, respectively, year over year, but up compared to 2020, 2019, and 2018.

Meanwhile, personnel shortages are putting a burden on local law enforcement. In anticipation of violence, the CPD has already canceled officers’ days off ahead of Memorial Day weekend. If required, certain police may work 12-hour shifts over the weekend.
