President Joe Biden, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, and local officials were among those who reacted to a mass shooting in Buffalo on Saturday afternoon, in which a self-described white supremacist murdered ten people and injured three more.

Authorities said Payton Gendron, 18, was detained for carrying out the shooting incident, which he allegedly live-streamed on the video game streaming site Twitch. Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement that she hopes Gramaglia will be held accountable for his actions, including incarceration for “the remainder of his days.”

“It is my earnest desire that this man, this white supremacist who has just committed a hate crime against an innocent community, will spend the rest of his life in prison. And may God bless him in the next world as well “Hochul said.

According to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were informed of the tragedy and were praying for those affected.

“The President has been briefed on the tragic incident in Buffalo, New York, this afternoon by his Homeland Security Advisor. He will get updates throughout the evening and tomorrow as new information becomes available “Jean-Pierre said, “The President and First Lady are praying for those who have died and their families.”

President Biden afterward issued a statement thanking the law enforcement officers who “took quick action” to put an end to the shooting rampage.

“Tonight, we mourn for the families of the 10 persons whose lives were senselessly snatched, as well as for everyone suffering from the physical and mental scars of this awful incident. We are appreciative of the bravery of law officers and other first responders who acted quickly to protect and preserve lives “Biden stated. “The First Lady and I are praying for the victims and their families, and the people of Buffalo have our hearts.”

Biden also stated that racism and domestic terrorism are “antithetical” to what America stands for, citing Saturday’s racially motivated assault.

“We’ll discover more about the reason for today’s shooting when law enforcement investigates,” he continued. “Any act of domestic terrorism, especially one committed in the service of a vile white supremacist ideology, is diametrically opposed to everything America stands for. There must be no safe haven for hatred. We must do all in our ability to put a stop to domestic terrorism motivated by hatred.”

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also took to Twitter to condemn “the plague of racism and anti-Semitism.”

“I’m saddened for the victims of today’s tragedy in Buffalo, and I’m praying for their loved ones and first responders,” Gillibrand said on Twitter. “To keep our communities safe, we must do more to combat the scourge of racism and anti-Semitism, as well as adopt basic gun safety regulations.”

The outpouring of emotion extended beyond politicians, with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen expressing “totally saddened” over the shooting.
