Police in Minnesota is investigating an incident in which a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress was reportedly threatened while canvassing door-to-door this week.
The Faribault Police Department, which covers the community about 50 miles south of Minneapolis, stated in an update Wednesday that detectives have identified a suspect in the incident involving Jennifer Carnahan, who spent three years as head of the Minnesota Republican Party from 2017 to 2021.
Carnahan, the widow of former U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn, who died in February following a cancer struggle, is running in this year’s special election to complete the remainder of her late husband’s term.
“Today’s actions remind me how critical it is that we reclaim our nation from the extreme left and restore the rule of law in Minnesota and across the country,” Carnahan said in a statement following the incident. “Today’s sad circumstances will not dissuade me from fighting for the people of southern Minnesota and putting America first.”
Officers from Faribault were called to a threat report at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday. According to the police department’s original news statement regarding the incident, Carnahan informed investigators she was going door to door to campaign for Congress when she was approached in the 1000 block of 1st Street SE by a person who made multiple threatening comments to her.
Faribault Police Chief John Sherwin called the act “unacceptable” and asked for aid from witnesses or anybody with new information in identifying the man and his car. Police announced Wednesday that they were no longer looking for information on the suspect’s identity or car, noting that investigators located and visited him at his residence in the Faribault area Tuesday evening. The probe is still ongoing as of Wednesday.
In a message posted on her Facebook page, Carnahan described what transpired as “something extremely terrible happened to me,” detailing how “shaking in wrath,” a young guy “swore at me and threatened me – warning me my life was not safe on the streets.”
“He got in his car minutes later, drove at what looked to be an increased speed for a residential road, accelerated, and swerved at me as I was walking down the street,” Carnahan said.
“I was luckily unharmed, immediately dialed 911, made a police complaint, and intend to pursue all proper charges against this man,” she wrote. “I truly thank the men and women of the Faribault Police Department and 911 call centers for responding quickly and assisting me through a very stressful incident, as well as everything our law enforcement officials do to keep us safe.”
