According to the Raleigh police chief, a man who reportedly used incendiary devices to set fire to police cars at a North Carolina police station was murdered after threatening an officer with one of the devices.

“We think the suspect was employing incendiary devices, which we believe were Molotov cocktails,” Raleigh Police Chief Estella D. Patterson said at a press conference Saturday night.
Two police vehicles were “engulfed in flames,” according to the chief.

According to Patterson, one of the explosives was thrown at an officer, prompting four cops to open fire. Patterson said the suspect was brought to a hospital and pronounced dead after being struck many times. His identity was not revealed right away.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Inquiry will undertake an independent investigation in accordance with Raleigh police procedure on officer-involved shootings. The event was filmed on various surveillance and body-worn cameras, according to Patterson, and authorities are looking into it.
