Rolando Reyes, the grandfather of Texas school shooting suspect Salvador Ramos, expressed sympathy for the victims of the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday, which killed at least 19 kids and two teachers.
“I grieve for the victims and their families,” Reyes said as he climbed into his car on Wednesday, adding that his now-deceased grandson’s alleged acts on Tuesday made him “unhappy.”
When asked whether he could send Ramos some type of message, he answers, “I’m not going to say anything anymore, OK?”
According to investigators, the 18-year-old alleged gunman had been living with his grandparents in Uvalde, where he attended a local high school. On Wednesday afternoon, multiple FBI agents entered and exited Ramos’ grandparents’ home.
Later that day, Reyes said he had no idea Ramos possessed weapons in their home.
He explained, “I get up at five o’clock, leave, and come back.”
Ramos became besieged inside the elementary school during the incident, according to Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin. The accused shooter is thought to have been shot and killed by a Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) agent. On the scene, two cops were shot and wounded, although they are likely to live.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Wednesday that Ramos made three disturbing Facebook posts beginning about 30 minutes before the incident.
Ramos was the first to post, “I’m going to shoot my granny.”
He added a few minutes later, “I shot my granny.”
He also reportedly sent a lady a message about his plans before carrying out the terrible assault, and he also uploaded unsettling photos online before the shooting.
Tuesday’s attack was the bloodiest at an elementary school since Adam Lanza, then 20 years old, shot and murdered 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Twenty of the victims were children between the ages of six and seven. It also happened ten days after ten people were killed in a mass shooting at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
