Over the weekend, the United States was shaken by horrific shootings that took at least 11 lives from coast to coast. Overall, figures reveal that the United States has had 33 mass shootings between the beginning of this month and May 15.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting occurs when “four or more [people] are shot or killed, not counting the gunman.” According to the database as of Monday morning, there have been 33 mass shootings in the month of May, including the Laguna Woods church massacre and the Buffalo Grocery Store incident.
There is no agreement on what constitutes a “mass shooting,” although it is often described as an occurrence in which at least four people are injured or killed in one area, not counting the gunman. The FBI does not define a “mass shooting,” but a “mass killer” is someone who murders at least four persons in a single occurrence.
The devastating mass shootings this month have devastated communities, including Buffalo, New York, where a self-described White nationalist killed ten people and injured three more in a shooting at a grocery store.
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, police secure the area around a store where numerous people were killed in a shooting in Buffalo, New York. According to authorities, the shooter entered the supermarket with a firearm and began the fire. Investigators suspect the guy was live-streaming the shooting and are investigating whether he put a manifesto online.
Except for one victim, all of the victims at Tops Friendly Markets were over the age of 50, and 11 of the victims were Black, while two were White. A former police officer, a grocery store security guard, a local food pantry cook, and a deacon of a local church were among that slain.
“This is terrifying. It’s heartbreaking. I’m at a loss for words to explain it “After learning that former Buffalo Police Officer Aaron Salter was among that slain, Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans expressed his shock.
Payton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, New York, was identified as the alleged shooter. During a news conference on Saturday, officials stated that evidence shows the shooting was racially motivated, citing a nearly 180-page manifesto written by the shooter describing the attack.
Experts attribute the surge in violence in 2020 to the Ferguson effect, which occurred with the killing of George Floyd that year, the accompanying Black Lives Matter and defunding the police rallies and rioting, and the coronavirus upending society in unprecedented ways.
“Certainly, the mid-2020 protests and rioting in response to the death of George Floyd followed a pattern of rising violence witnessed in the aftermath of other viral police events, such as the killings of Michael Brown and Freddie Gray. The ‘Ferguson Effect’ describes this pattern: police pullback as violent crime skyrockets.” Hannah Meyers, Manhattan Institute’s director of the police and public safety effort
