A collection of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jewish groups has petitioned Starbucks to cease charging more for vegan milk substitutes, claiming that the practice amounts to a tax on individuals who have adopted plant-based diets.

In a statement published Friday, an interfaith alliance formed by Nevada-based Hindu activist Rajan Zed urged the coffee company to discontinue the “unethical and discriminatory” taxes.

“A coffee corporation should not be in the business of taxing persons who have chosen a plant-based lifestyle,” Zed stated in a statement co-signed by Episcopal priest Thomas W. Blake, Greek Orthodox clergyman Stephen R. Karcher, Buddhist priest Matthew Fisher, and Jewish rabbi Elizabeth Webb Beyer.

Many religious leaders mentioned dietary limitations, ethical concerns, environmental concerns, lactose intolerance, milk allergies, and animal welfare as reasons why some Starbucks consumers prefer alternatives to dairy.

Those who desire plant-based milk should not have to pay extra, they added, urging Seattle-based business CEO Howard Schultz and board chair Mellody Hobson to remove the fee immediately.

In the United States, beverages produced with plant-based milks often cost 50 cents to a $1 more.

“For an extra fee (similar to other beverage customizations such as an additional espresso shot or syrup), customers can personalize any beverage on the menu with a non-dairy milk, including soymilk, coconut milk, almond milk, and oat milk,” a Starbucks spokeswoman said in a statement. “Pricing differs by market.”

It’s not the first time Starbucks’ fee has enraged customers. To protest the practice, activist and actor James Cromwell glued his palm to the counter of a Starbucks location in New York City on Tuesday.

James Cromwell, the actor and activist from “Succession,” stuck his hand to the counter of a Starbucks in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday to protest the surcharge. Cromwell wore a “Free the Animals” T-shirt and issued a statement condemning the vegan milk surcharge.

“When are you going to stop making massive profits while consumers, animals, and the environment suffer?” he questioned as fellow activists live-streamed the demonstration on Facebook.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights organization, planned the demonstration.

Cromwell, 81, later scraped it off with a knife. There were no arrests, according to police.

Cromwell’s protest is not his first. In 2017, the actor was charged with trespassing for interfering with an orca display at SeaWorld in San Diego. Starbucks did not immediately reply to an Associated Press request for comment.
