On Wednesday, a survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado and the parent of a victim of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Florida offered their views on the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which took 21 lives.

The shooting at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday killed 19 students, two teachers, and the suspect, making it the deadliest shooting at an elementary school since Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, when shooting suspect Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults in 2012.

During the Columbine High School massacre, Kacey Johnson crouched behind a table, using a chair to defend herself, when she was wounded in the shoulder at close range before fleeing with other survivors.

“I recall every detail of that fateful day at Columbine. It’s heartbreaking to think that young kids are seeing and feeling the same things I did in the library. “I mean, they’re babies, and it’s devastating. I never imagined it would happen to me, and it continues to happen to others. You never imagine it might happen to you.”

What irritates Johnson the most about school shootings is that individuals believe “that at any point and for any reason…appropriate it’s to do this to other people.”

“It is a difficult life to enter. Nobody wants to be a member of the school shooting club.’ [Y]ou are shoved in without being asked. Everything changes and your old normal will never return “She stated.

Ryan Petty, the father of deceased 17-year-old Alaina Petty, a victim of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, recalled being part of a group text message with other parents trying to locate their children after the Parkland shooting that killed 17, checking off names “one by one” and realizing his daughter’s name was not on that list.

“If Uvalde is anything like the community in Parkland, which I am confident it is,” Petty added, “people will come together to offer assistance, and I expect it will happen here.” “I can’t express how significant that is. People will remember the loved ones they have lost. Looking back, what I cherish the most is when people remember and honor [my daughter], which is the most you can hope for.”

The investigation into Tuesday’s incident is still underway. After killing 21 people, shooting suspects Salvador Ramos was slain. The alleged shooter is thought to have been killed by a Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) agent. Two cops were shot and injured on the site, but they are expected to recover.
