
Following a pistol and axe assault Thursday night in the central Israeli city of Elad that left three people dead, Israeli security forces said they captured two suspects on Sunday. Assad Yussef Assad Al-Rafa, 19, and Subhi Imad Subhi Abu Shakir, 20, were previously recognized by the police.
According to a police statement released on Friday, they are both natives of the town of Romana in Jenin province. After a manhunt including helicopters, roadblocks, and car checkpoints, the arrests were made.
According to the Israeli emergency agency Zaka Tel Aviv, the three men slain in the incident died at the scene and were buried Friday after a large funeral procession. Oren Ben Yiftach, a father of six, Yonatan Habakkuk, a father of five, and Boaz Gol, a father of five, were identified by the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency agency. According to the MDA, they were all in their forties.
The hospitals treating the three men injured in the incident confirmed Sunday that they are currently in stable condition. According to Beilinson Hospital, the two patients are ventilated and sedated, and their status is “severe but stable.” The injured 20-year-condition old’s at the Sheba medical center has not changed, according to the hospital, which described him as “stable but critical with significant head injuries from an axe.”
Elad, the site of the incident, is a peaceful, modest, and predominantly religious city in central Israel, not far from Ben Gurion International Airport. The attack was the most recent in a string of violent episodes that have heightened tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territories in recent weeks.
Since March 22, dozens of people have died as a result of the violence in Israel and the West Bank. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett issued a statement condemning the incident and expressing his sympathies to the victims’ families.

Following the incident, Israel stated it will keep Gaza and the West Bank locked at least until Monday, extending closures already in place for Israeli holidays.
Palestinians residing in specified areas will only be able to enter Israel with prior approval on humanitarian grounds, under rare circumstances, or for medical reasons, according to the Israeli Defense Forces.
According to his administration, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also denounced the violence on Thursday.
During the last 10 days of Ramadan each year, only Muslims are permitted to visit the sacred location, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif or Noble Sanctuary. Israeli Jewish groups began coming again on Thursday.
