An specialist has warned that the UK will see a “substantial increase” in monkeypox cases over the next week, since fresh illnesses have been detected in continental Europe and the United States.
There have been 120 confirmed or suspected cases recorded worldwide, including 20 in the United Kingdom, with the bulk of illnesses in Spain attributed to a sauna in Madrid.
Switzerland reported its first confirmed case on Saturday after an infected individual had a fever, rash, and felt ill, according to officials.
According to them, the virus was caused through “close physical contact overseas,” and the infected person is being isolated at home.
The Netherlands said on Saturday that “many people” have caught monkeypox, a day after the country reported its first case.
In Germany, at least two cases of monkeypox have been reported in Berlin, after the discovery of the country’s first illness in Munich on Friday.
After the state of Massachusetts verified its first case earlier this week, it was revealed that a patient in New York City had caught monkeypox.
On Saturday, Israel revealed its first case, a guy in his 30s who had returned from a vacation to Western Europe. With minor symptoms, he has been isolated at a medical facility.
It comes after illnesses were detected in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, and Canada in the previous week, largely in young males who had never been to Africa.
On Friday, France, Belgium, and Australia reported their first instances.
Some UK health facilities are already barring walk-ins in order to reduce the spread of illnesses.
According to David Heymann, an infectious disease specialist at the World Health Organization, the pox infiltrated the community in a “sexual form.”
“What appears to be occurring today is that it has entered the population as a sexual, genital form, and is being distributed as are sexually transmitted illnesses, which has expanded its transmission over the world,” he explained.
According to the president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), some clinic workers have received the smallpox vaccination, which is effective against monkeypox, and discussions are underway about administering doses to “possible risk populations.”
