According to the new policy, cops, however, no longer be authorized to pursue persons who flee during a conflict.

CPD Superintendent David Brown expressed his hope that the new policy will increase police safety and accountability.

Foot-pursuit regulations “keep cops safe” by limiting “physicality” between officers and criminals, particularly armed criminals.

Because of the inherent hazards associated with foot pursuits,” the new guideline adds, “the best suitable tactical method to safely arrest a fleeing person will vary in every case.”

The superintendent noted in a statement that “the safety of our community members and officers remains at the foundation of this new foot pursuit policy.
