
Democrats sparred over illegal immigration during tour to southern border
- The House Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth held a hearing in McAllen, Texas.
- Members of the delegation toured impoverished “Colonia” villages along the border.
- They also toured landing areas for migrants arriving by raft on the Rio Grande.
During a congressional trip to southern Texas on Friday, members of the committee traded political barbs on immigration, hearing etiquette, and whether members are paying attention to numerous issues near the southern border.
The House Select Committee on Economic Disparity held a hearing for examining people’s living conditions and infrastructure.
Members of the delegation toured impoverished “colonia” villages along the border. Separate from the formal part of the committee trip, Republicans claimed was a big catastrophe caused by Democrats.
Rep. Jodey Arrington stated following a visit to the Rio Grande with Texas Department of Public Safety troops. “It’s lawlessness and the pandemonium is blazing out of control.
Officers showed the participants a piece of a privately constructed border wall between the river and farmers’ fields on the US side.

The boat also made multiple stops to tour landing areas for migrants arriving by raft on the Rio Grande. The riverside vegetation, however, badly trampled in several areas, indicating that a great volume of traffic had gone through.
“Continuing to utilize the Rio Grande Valley as a political background and using my citizens as political pawns is foolish and terribly insulting of my Republican colleagues,” he said.
“It’s past time for my Republican colleagues to get down and understand a little bit about what makes South Texans tick.”
This week, the select committee on tax policy will hold another hearing.
