
Alex Murdaugh accused of participating in a narcotics trafficking scheme
- Alex Murdaugh allegedly conspired with Curtis Edward Smith to write hundreds of checks.
- In order for his surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, to receive the proceeds from a $10 million life insurance policy.
According to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, Alex Murdaugh gave Curtis Edward Smith, a distant cousin, and former personal injury client. At least 437 checks totaling about $2.4 million over the period of eight years.
Murdaugh wrote hundreds of checks to Smith between October 7, 2013, and February 28, 2021. Especially for amounts totaling less than $10,000 each in order to avoid raising the banks’ suspicions.
In order to facilitate the purchase or distribution of illegally obtained drugs. Smith allegedly converted the checks to cash after forging the endorsers of associates occasionally without their knowledge or consent.
The alleged scheme however described as involving “narcotics, dangerous drugs, or controlled substances.” It was “multi-county in nature and having transpired and having significance in more than one county in this state.
Each of Murdaugh and Smith however accused of two counts of conspiracy.
He however previously indicted by a Hampton County grand jury in November on allegations. He made this his first indictment from a state grand jury.
In order for his surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, to be eligible to receive the proceeds from a $10 million life insurance policy.

Murdaugh allegedly conspired with Smith to have him shot dead on the side of the road.
On November 18, 2021, a grand jury in Colleton County indicted Smith for marijuana possession and methamphetamine possession with the intent to distribute.
As of Tuesday, the state grand jury had charged Murdaugh with 16 indictments totaling 81 charges for fraud schemes against victims.
