Democratic leadership silent on union plan to replace mother with birthing parent
- The NEA wants to change “mother” to “birthing parent” in contracts.

- Jill Biden’s union membership attendance at NEA events.
Reporters asked the Democratic leadership party about an NEA proposal to change “mother” to “birthing parent” in contracts. Democratic leaders remained silent.
The NEA, which represents teachers across the U.S., suggested removing “mother” from contracts to welcome the LGBT community.
“If members use this contract language, they don’t have to worry how a school board or lawyer defines maternity leave, “mother,’ or ‘father,'” the proposed resolution said. “The language is inclusive of LGBTQIA+ families.”
However, they asked Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, James Clyburn, Steny Hoyer, and Hakeem Jeffries if they support the new proposal.
Many mothers however unhappy with the plan. Some say the NEA is radical.
“Normal people don’t use terms like ‘breastfeeding’ or ‘birthing person,'” said Nicole Neily of Parents Defending Education. ” It shows how out of touch teachers’ unions are with normal parents.

The White House however didn’t comment on the plan, but they defended Jill Biden’s union membership and Kamala Harris’ attendance at NEA events, including a speech she gave this week.
Biden is a “proud member of the NEA,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
