Victorious Argentina

Julian Alvarez scored twice and Lionel Messi scored a penalty as Argentina beat 2018 runners-up Croatia 3-0 in the first World Cup semi-final. Argentina will face France or Morocco in Sunday’s final.

The two-time world champions, backed by a large majority of the audience at Lusail Stadium, produced their greatest performance of the tournament to advance to Sunday’s final.

Messi, 35, lost the 2014 final to Germany and wants to win his first World Cup to add to Argentina’s 1978 and 1986 titles.

After scoring a first-half penalty, he set up the game-winning goal.

Croatia, runners-up in Russia four years ago, lost in the quarterfinals for the second time after losing to France in 1998.

Enzo Fernandez’s low attempt from outside the box in the 25th minute had indications of life, but Dominik Livakovic saved it.

A lofted ball over the top from Fernandez caught out the Croatian defense. Alvarez latched on to it, knocking the ball past Livakovic, who clashed with the striker. Italian referee Daniele Orsato directed to the spot.
