Updated box office forecasts indicate that James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is on track to significantly outperform its previous Christmas holiday weekend box office total, defying all logic and appearing to have performed a post-pandemic miracle. The movie is doing well in its third weekend since release after beating its own projections on Friday night with a take of $24.4 million, up 27% from a week ago and +7% from last weekend’s Christmas holiday, and industry insiders predict a potential 4-day between $87 million and $92 million.

The Way of Water now appears on course to surpass the domestic total of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which should finish the weekend at $440 million domestic. Its historic rivals include 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which had $440.9 million by the same time of year and had $440.9 million domestically. Avatar is presently anticipated to earn a modest $77 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $435.1 million.

The $104.2 million domestic weekend haul for Avatar is good news for theatre chains as well; because of the increased foot traffic, sales are up 5% over the $98.9 million Spider-Man: No Way Home made over the same period last year.

Before this weekend’s estimates are taken into account, the movie has a current global gross of $1.2 billion. This weekend, it is also expected to surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($411 million).

The Way of Water’s final box office projections ranges from $1.6 billion to $1.9 billion, which would guarantee it surpasses Top Gun: Maverick ($1.48 billion) as the biggest movie of 2022 and give it a realistic chance of breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home’s post-pandemic record of $1.9 billion and becoming only the sixth movie in history to earn $2 billion. Three of the top six movies, if the movie is a success, will be Cameron movies, which is an amazing feat.

The movie is also displaying the kind of legs that lead to a huge box office take, and it won’t face any competition for multiplex audiences until February when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens. Jake Sully and Neytiri join the aquatic clans of Pandora in the 2009 sequel to Avatar as they flee a new threat posed by the humans who had previously been driven off the planet. Thanks to multiple well-timed re-releases throughout the years, the original movie has made nearly $2.9 billion worldwide and $785 million domestically.
