The nation of Pakistan was a former colony. Our elite were mostly the same people who wrote that dogs and Indians shouldn’t be let outside of buildings during the pre-colonial era, which is how we came to have them. Pakistanis have always aspired to be more western, adopting their language, culture, and even clothing. This is because the elite is what fosters the culture that is often depicted in popular media. A disparaging name for anyone who does not speak English is “paindu.” Many of our artists can be heard declaring, “We don’t speak Urdu well,” as though doing so represents some sort of professional accomplishment. Too many parents in typical households push their children to speak English. Netizens saw Saba Shah, aka Aizal from Farq, doing the same thing.

She admitted in an interview that she struggles to speak Urdu effectively and is quite “burger.” While she was born, raised, and attended school in Pakistan, she struggled to communicate in her mother tongue, and her friends used to tease her about it.
