One of Hollywood’s most courageous actresses who understands the value of both her star and her persona is Angelina Jolie. She has never been content with the opportunities presented to her, and she is always clear about the character she needs to play. She had other dreams, but being a Bond Girl was not one of them. As a result, in 2006, when she was given the role of Vesper Lynd for the new James Bond in Casino Royale, she declined because she wanted to be James Bond.

Angelina received an invitation to portray the Bond Girl without applying for the role, while actresses were waiting in line to play Vesper Lynd. Yet, she was more keen on playing James Bond than merely the girl. Eva Green won the part in the end.

Once in a 2010 interview, Angelina Jolie had opened up about why she didn’t choose to do the Bond franchise and shared, “It started with a call from Amy [Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures]. She asked if I wanted to play a Bond girl. I said, ‘No, I’m not comfortable with that, but I would like to play Bond.’”

We laughed, and then a year or so later, she called back and said, “I think I found it,” Angelina Jolie continued. then she was given the role of Salt. The role of C.I.A. agent Edwin Salt was written with a male actor in mind, but Tom Cruise declined the role because he felt the character was too similar to his Mission Impossible persona.

As Salt’s focus shifted from being on men to being on women and featuring Angelina Jolie, the actress talked about the difficulties she had to overcome. She said, “You think it would be easy [to change]. You just flip the character from Edwin to Edwina. But it was a lot trickier than we thought. For example, the male character had a child. And he knows he’ll be in danger much of the time. And we realized that, as a woman, if you knew your life was at such risk, you’d never have a child.”
