Apart from Shazam! March has been a fantastic month for sequels. God’s wrath, of course. At the domestic box office, Avatar: The Way of Water broke Titanic’s record while Scream 6 and Creed III both had back-to-back opening weekends that broke franchise records. John Wick: Chapter 4 is anticipated to make a series-topping debut the following weekend as well. Nonetheless, the sixth Scream movie reached a significant financial milestone this week. In only a few days, the movie will surpass the fifth Scream’s domestic and worldwide box office totals of $81 million and $137 million, respectively.

Scream VI has made $116 million worldwide in just 10 days of release after earning $76 million at the home box office and an additional $40 million from foreign markets. The movie outperformed predictions in its first weekend, earning a domestic debut of $44 million, a franchise high, and $67 million globally.

Scream VI will now focus on the four remaining films in the venerable horror franchise after surpassing Scream 4’s $97 million global gross. At $173 million worldwide, the original Scream still holds the top rank. Scream 2, which was released only a year later, is close behind with $172 million. Scream 3 broke the franchise record for the biggest domestic opening weekend ($34 million in 2000) and concluded its run with $161 million worldwide.

Scream VI, which is co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (also known as Radio Silence), comes just a year after the fifth Scream movie, which was a successful reboot of the series thanks to its witty satire on sequels and the rise of heightened horror, did so. Scream VI is the first installment in the franchise to take place outside of the made-up town of Woodsboro, and it is only the second movie in the series to not be directed by Wes Craven (Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett previously handled the helm on Scream 5). The survivors from the previous movie are now in New York City, where they unavoidably come into contact with the Ghostface killer.
