Riaz, a trailblazer in Pakistani cinema, had a significant influence on both the movie business and society at large. At the beginning of his work in the middle of the 20th century, Riaz concentrated on themes of social justice and inequality.
Riaz began his writing career by contributing to magazines like Chattan and Lail o Nihar, both of which were connected to eminent poet and thinker Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Riaz was born in 1927 and studied at Islamia College in Lahore. Early works by Riaz showed concern for social justice and equality issues; these topics would continue to be important to his films.
In association with the well-known poet Habib Jalib, Riaz created a number of movies with inequality as their main theme. These included Clerk, Susral, and Khamosh Raho, which provided insight on how society views things like physical incapacity, poverty, and other calamities.
Riaz highlighted geopolitical concerns in addition to socioeconomic inequities in Pakistan. He discussed the predicament of Arab Muslims in Palestine in Shaheed Zerqa and the atrocities done against Kashmiris in Yeh Aman.
The impact of Riaz goes beyond the films he directed. His work served as an inspiration for artists and activists, notably his son, veteran actor Shaan Shahid, who has continued his father’s tradition of using art to advance social problems. Riaz is a significant character in Pakistani cultural history because of his contributions to the country’s cinema and his dedication to social justice.
