Bangladesh stunned world champion England by scoring a career-high 73 in Twenty20 to win the series 3-0 on Tuesday in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Bangladesh defeated England by 16 runs in the third and final T20 in Dhaka, a major humiliation for England’s normally ruthless white ball team ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.

The first game was won by Bangladesh by six wickets, while the second was won by four wickets, giving the home team their first series win over England, the defending T20 and ODI World Cup champions, in any format.

England captain Jos Buttler said, “It´s really disappointing obviously to lose but congratulations to Bangladesh. They outplayed us and they deserve their victory.”

England was given 159 runs to win after winning the toss and choosing to bowl. Despite a strong start, Taskin Ahmed took 2-26, England only managed 142 runs for the loss of six wickets.

In the very first over, debutant Tanvir Islam bowled Phil Salt out for a duck.

But England got back on track with a second-wicket stand of 95, and Dawid Malan, who survived on review after being given out lbw for six, and Buttler appeared to be cruising.

Malan was bowled out by Mustafizur Rahman for 53, giving him his 100th wicket in a Twenty20 International. This was the first twist in the contest.

With a direct hit from Mehidy Hasan, Buttler was soon out for 40, which brought Bangladesh back into the contest and got the crowd going.

“Potentially cost (us) the game,” Buttler acknowledged of his dismissal.

Buttler said, “(I was) really disappointed in myself for not diving and not making my ground. You know you should be fully committed to making that run.”

Before Shakib Al Hasan got rid of Sam Curran, Taskin took Moeen Ali (nine) and Ben Duckett (11), completing the rout.

Liton, Bangladesh’s opener, had put on 55 runs with Rony Talukdar in the opening stand when he batted.

Adil Rashid gave England their first victory when he bowled out Rony for 24, but Najmul Hossain and Liton added 84 runs for the second wicket to keep the momentum going.

When Duckett dropped Liton on 51 at deep midwicket off Jofra Archer, England missed a chance to dismiss the right-hander shortly after his ninth T20I fifty.

Chris Jordan ended Liton’s 57-ball innings, forcing him to give Salt a catch deep in the middle of the wicket.

After Liton’s dismissal, England did well to contain the Bangladeshi batsmen, who only scored one boundary in the final overs.

In any case, Najmul, who made due on 40 subsequent to being given lbw off Jordan, guaranteed Bangladesh actually had a respectable score with his third 40 or more innings in the series.

England’s Jordan and Rashid finished with scores of 1-21 and 1-23, respectively.

“I thought it was a good score to restrict them to, and the wicket played better as time went on. Furthermore, we got into a position where ideally we (could) kick on and dominate the match,” Buttler said. ” However, that did not occur.”

Shakib, the captain of Bangladesh, said that his batsmen had done well on a difficult wicket.

Shakib said, “We were really good in this T20 series, I thought we fielded exceptionally throughout these three matches. I think all the bowlers bowled well, they have been always good,”

“I thought we batted really well on a tricky wicket,” he said. “We knew we had to bowl well and… stick to our plans.”

England won the previous three-match one-day international series 2-1, winning the ODI World Cup at home in 2019 and the T20 title in Australia in 2018.
