KU, NACTA inks MoU to counter extremism and its threat to society
KARACHI: The University of Karachi and the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) signed the memorandum of understanding to establish collaboration and partnership to counter extremism and its threat to society, and institutions and spread the importance of ethical and moral values, socio-economic development, and rule of law.
According to the MoU, both parties are determined to create a partnership to inculcate national harmony and to prevent students from the various dimensions and ill effects of violent extremism and terrorism
They hoped that this MoU would help to educate students against extremist ideologies and agendas by encouraging critical thinking via various curricular and extra-curricular activities and support the students in de-radicalization and re-integration into society as productive citizens
As per the MoU, the KU will share with NACTA the directory of research experts in areas of extremism, de-radicalization, counter-terrorism, conflict, peace studies, and other areas of relevance and both Parties will continue updating the directory.
This directory may be used when any particular assistance is required from a researcher on a specific topic. The FM radio channels or any other outreach platform at the universities will also be utilized for the purpose.
Both parties will undertake workshops, seminars, and discussions to enhance sensitization amongst the teachers against extremism and terrorism in the institution and will train the teachers to identify, rectify, and/or report such elements to competent authorities.
They will take steps to review the existing curricula and make recommendations for inclusion of the national harmony and peace, and to prevent extremism, hate material, radicalization, and terrorism on and off campus.
The KU Dean of the Faculty of the Arts and Social Sciences Prof Dr Shaista Tabassum and the Director General of Research and Development NACTA Dr Khalid Chauhan inked the MoU documents at the Vice Chancellor Secretariat.
