Beijing-based startup Orienspace successfully launched China’s most powerful private-sector-developed rocket, the Gravity-1, marking a significant stride in the realm of commercial space endeavors traditionally dominated by the country’s state agencies.

The historic launch took place from a ship off the coast of eastern Shandong province, where the Gravity-1 rocket delivered three remote-sensing satellites into orbit, as confirmed by Orienspace in an official statement. Founded in 2020 by veterans from China’s state space agencies, Orienspace had initially planned the debut of Gravity-1 for the latter half of 2023.

Distinguishing itself as the most potent launch vehicle developed by a private Chinese enterprise, the Gravity-1 boasts the capability to carry a payload of up to 6,500 kg (14,330 lb) into low earth orbit. This unprecedented achievement positions Orienspace as a key player in the burgeoning private space sector.

The successful launch of Gravity-1 holds the promise of transforming the landscape for commercial satellite launches into low- and mid-altitude orbits within the nascent private sector. Orienspace’s CEO reported securing orders for launching hundreds of satellites, emphasizing the growing demand for private space services.

Gravity-1’s remarkable features include the capacity to place as many as 30 satellites into orbit in a single launch, with the additional advantage of being launched from a mobile sea platform. This flexibility in launch sites enhances the overall accessibility and efficiency of Orienspace’s operations. The ability to launch from the sea mitigates risks associated with falling rocket stages, reducing the potential impact on inhabited areas upon re-entry.

Notably, Orienspace’s Gravity-1 debut makes the company the fifth private Chinese firm to operate its own carrier rocket, joining the ranks of i-Space, Galactic Energy, Space Pioneer, and LandSpace, according to Chinese state media. This achievement underscores the increasing prowess and competitiveness of China’s private space industry.

The successful unveiling of Gravity-1 is anticipated to usher in a new era of commercial space exploration, further cementing China’s position as a formidable player in the global space industry.
