Facebook’s “poke” feature, a nostalgic relic of the platform’s early days, is making a resurgence with new enhancements and changes in functionality. While the exact purpose of poking has always been open to interpretation, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reintroducing it as a friendly gesture to say “hi” to friends.

The history of poking on Facebook has been somewhat mysterious, with users viewing it as a way to get someone’s attention, annoy them, or even flirt. Over the years, the feature faded into obscurity but is now experiencing a revival as part of Facebook’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.

Meta recently announced that they have improved the platform’s recommendations for poking and simplified the process of accessing the poking page through search. Additionally, users can now poke a friend directly while searching for them on Facebook.

Despite its initial ambiguity, poking has seen a significant resurgence, with Facebook reporting a 13-fold increase in poking activity in the past month. Interestingly, younger users aged 18 to 29 are driving this revival, accounting for over 50% of pokes.
