Muslims worldwide are eagerly anticipating the celebration of Eid al-Fitr this week following a month of fasting during Ramadan. As the holy month draws to a close, attention turns to the sighting of the new moon, which signals the start of Eid al-Fitr and its joyous feasting tradition.

Dedicated moon-sighting teams in various regions are scanning the skies with telescopes and binoculars in search of the crescent moon, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar.

The timing of Muslim holidays, including Eid al-Fitr, relies heavily on the lunar cycle and the sighting of the new moon’s crescent. Due to factors like sky visibility and geographical location, the exact date of Eid celebrations can vary between countries and even regions within the same country.

In the United Kingdom, Ramadan 2024 began on March 11 according to the lunar calendar. The end of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the next crescent moon, typically occurring between the 29th and 30th day of the holy month.

British astronomers from the HM Nautical Almanack Office utilize data on moon visibility in the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco to forecast the date of Eid al-Fitr. Based on their analysis, it is expected that the new moon will be visible in most locations on the evening of Tuesday, April 9. As a result, Eid celebrations in the UK are likely to commence on Wednesday, April 10.
