FBR Responds to Mini Budget Rumours
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken a stringent step towards ensuring tax compliance by ordering the blocking of mobile phone SIMs belonging to individuals who are obligated to file income tax returns for the tax year 2023 but are not listed on the active taxpayer registry.
In an Income Tax General Order (ITGO) issued under the authority vested by Section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the FBR has directed the blocking of SIMs belonging to 506,671 individuals who have failed to fulfill their tax obligations.
This move underscores the FBR’s commitment to enhancing tax collection and encouraging tax compliance among citizens. By targeting non-compliant taxpayers, the FBR aims to strengthen revenue generation efforts and ensure that all eligible individuals contribute their fair share to the national exchequer.
To enforce the ITGO, the FBR has instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and all telecom operators to take immediate action to block the SIMs of non-compliant taxpayers. The FBR has emphasized the importance of swift implementation of the order to effectively enforce tax regulations.
Additionally, the FBR has mandated that telecom operators provide a compliance report by May 15, 2024, detailing the actions taken to enforce the ITGO and block SIMs as per the directive.
For individuals concerned about their status on the FBR SIM Block List, they can easily check their name by using the ctrl+F command and entering their CNIC number or full name. This transparent process allows taxpayers to verify their compliance status and take the necessary actions to rectify any discrepancies.
Overall, the FBR’s initiative to block SIMs for non-compliant taxpayers serves as a significant step towards fostering tax compliance and ensuring the integrity of the tax system in Pakistan. By leveraging technology and regulatory measures, the FBR aims to create a fair and transparent tax environment conducive to economic growth and development.
