Punjab Govt launches crackdown against sale of plastic bags

LAHORE: A crackdown has been launched against the illegal manufacture, delivery and sale of plastic bags across Punjab.

The Punjab Environment Department said that the government is distributing eco-friendly bags to the citizens.

According to the spokesperson of the environment department, the purpose of distribution of eco-friendly bags is to discourage the use of plastic bags. The shopkeepers are also being made aware of the harmful effects of plastic bags and the law.

According to the spokesperson, fines are being imposed on those who violate the law, cloth bags are also being distributed among the carters and shopkeepers, district officers themselves are monitoring the ban on plastic bags.

The decision was reached during a session on smog eradication chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, where the performance of various departments and stakeholders involved in addressing air pollution was closely evaluated.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the ban on plastic bags would come into effect across Punjab from June 6.
