SHC allows reporters to cover court proceedings

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) allowed court reporters across the country for court proceedings and directed them to ensure implementation of guidelines.

The SHC heard the petition against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority(PEMRA) ban on reporting of court proceedings.

The court said that the guidelines of the Supreme Court and relevant laws should be taken into account during the reporting of the court. The guidelines issued by the Supreme Court for the reporting of court proceedings should be implemented and PEMRA can take action over the violation of the guidelines of the SC.

The court extended the ongoing stay-order on PEMRA’s suspension of notification of prohibition on written order report only.

The court had stayed proceedings against court reporters and channel owners in light of PEMRA’s May 21 notification.

According to the counsel for the petitioners, after the order on the request of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists(PFUJ) , journalists from all over the country will be able to do responsible court reporting.

Earlier, the court had restrained PEMRA from taking action against 5 court reporters of Karachi and their channels.
