Post-Election Update: Omar Abdullah set to be new IIOJK CM

ISLAMABAD: The President’s rule in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has been lifted after 5 years, enabling the formation of a new government.

According to the IIOJK Post-Election update, Omar Abdullah is set to become CM of the IIOJK, with the first Assembly session scheduled for 16 Oct 2024.

Election Results: National Conference (NC) won 42 seats in the assembly elections. Its allies, Congress and Communist Party of India (CPI or CPM), secured six and one seats, respectively. With the support of five independent candidates and one Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, the NC-led alliance has a total of 55 seats.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Nomination: LG has yet to decide on nominating five additional Assembly members. It is anticipated that his nominations may align with the central Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP)-led government.

The Local Governance Restored: Elected representatives now have increased control over local governance, reducing direct central government intervention.

The Legislative Powers: legislative assembly can now reconvene to debate and pass laws specific to IIOJK.

The Financial Oversight: although the assembly can vote on financial matters, all grants and appropriations need the LG’s approval.

The LG’s Executive Control: Lieutenant Governor maintains authority over crucial areas, including police, public order, and land management.

Earlier,  President Asif Ali Zardari  categorically rejected the elections for the Legislative Assembly of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), asserting that the polls were no substitute for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

President Zardari, talking to a delegation of migrants from the IIOJK residing in Pakistan since 1989 led by Uzair Ahmed Ghazali at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, emphasised that such elections were unacceptable to the people of Kashmir and called upon the international community to hold the Modi government accountable for ongoing human rights violations in the occupied territory.

He further urged the need to take concrete steps toward conducting a plebiscite in line with relevant the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
