Donkey milk makes waves in Albania as demand for donkey milk products increase
In Albania’s Gjirokaster region, Fatiko and Veiz Basha are turning donkey milk into a sought-after luxury product. On their small farm, the Bashas produce cheese, curd, and whey from this rare milk, which Veiz calls “white gold.”
Scarcity drives its value, as each donkey produces only half a litre of milk per day, priced between €50-60 per litre. Their daughter Xhiko Basha noted, “There is high demand for donkey cheese,” which costs over €1,500 per kilogram due to the 25 litres of milk required for a single kilo.
The milk gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, praised for health benefits like strengthening the immune system and aiding respiratory issues. “Donkey milk heals children,” said Fatiko, as she demonstrated the care required to milk the animals.
Beyond the culinary world, the milk has made waves in cosmetics. Pharmacist Fabjola Meci, creator of the Leva Natural brand, highlighted its appeal: “Donkey’s milk is a real beauty secret.” Meci produces ultra-soft creams, gaining traction both locally and internationally.
With plans to expand their herd and reach new markets, the Bashas and other regional farmers are ensuring this ancient elixir finds a place in modern luxury. “Every drop makes you happy,” Veiz said with pride.
