Pakistan reports first case of Monkeypox in 2025
PESHAWAR: A passenger from Dubai has been tested positive for Monkeypox (Mpox) after arriving at Peshawar Airport on January 24 2025.
The patient has been shifted to Services Hospital Peshawar for treatment. It is the first Mpox case of the year in Pakistan.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advisor on Health, Ihtisham Ali, said the Public Health Reference Lab confirmed Mpox in a man from Dubai.
The health advisor said that after the Mpox case came to light, the public health team has transferred the patient to the Police Services Hospital.
The patient’s samples have been sent from the police hospital to the Public Health Reference Lab while a letter has been written to the Peshawar Airport manager seeking details of other passengers.
It is to be noted that 10 cases of Mpoxs have been reported in the province so far out which two cases have been reported in 2023, 7 in 2024 and one in 2025 so far.
Mpox (monkeypox) is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever. Most people fully recover, but some get very sick.
