Lahore: Pakistan’s head coach, Mike Hesson, emphasized the critical need for an aggressive batting approach in modern T20 cricket, stating that the team’s current struggles in the format largely stem from its batting performance. He also clarified that Babar Azam is seen purely as an opener and that there have been no discussions about him taking on wicket-keeping duties.
Hesson, speaking to media, confirmed that if Babar Azam secures a spot in the team, he will open the innings alongside either Saim Ayub or Fakhar Zaman. This statement comes amidst a week-long training camp focused on T20 preparations, where the coaching staff is working on various aspects of the game to improve the team’s standing.
The head coach stressed that while no specific batsman has been instructed to maintain a 150 strike rate, playing at a high tempo has become “indispensable” in contemporary T20 cricket. He believes that adopting a more aggressive mindset is crucial for Pakistan to compete effectively on the international stage.
Hesson also provided updates on the bowling department. He confirmed that Hasan Ali will join the team in the West Indies, acknowledging his excellent current form. He noted that other players have been given opportunities in the absence of key fast bowlers, with a preference for those who align with the team’s international strategy. Shaheen Shah Afridi, described as a “world-class bowler,” will be given ample opportunity to make a strong comeback and perform well.
Injury Updates and Selection Process:
Regarding injuries, Hesson confirmed that Haris Rauf is currently recovering but remains with the squad. Salman Mirza has been included in the squad as a replacement for Hasan Ali.
Shedding light on the selection process, Hesson revealed he is part of the selection committee. He explained that the committee initially selects 20 players, after which the captain and coach, through mutual consultation, finalize a 15-player squad. This final list is then sent to the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board for approval.
