ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the urgent restructuring of the National Tariff Commission (NTC) to enhance its legal, administrative, and institutional capacities, aligning it with the needs of a modern and competitive economy.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review the performance of the NTC, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a third-party review of the Commission’s recent performance to identify gaps and make it more effective.
“The restructuring of the National Tariff Commission is essential to meet the demands of the new tariff regime,” said Prime Minister Sharif. He stressed the need for the NTC to possess a robust capability to collect and analyze on-ground data related to domestic business activities, imports, and exports.
He further added that the Commission’s automated and efficient research capacity could play a pivotal role in resolving challenges faced by local industries and ensuring data-driven policy decisions.
He said that the NTC should be cognizant of all ground realities related to domestic business, imports, exports, and markets. The automated and efficient research capabilities of the NTC can play a key role in resolving issues faced by domestic businesses, he added.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the government was committed to addressing the NTC’s training and resource deficiencies and aligning its operations with modern requirements.
He directed the immediate activation of the NTC’s Appellate Tribunal and also sought a briefing on the implementation of the given directives by next month.
