KARACHI: A local court has granted police a two-day remand of the driver accused of fatally running over two siblings in a dumper truck accident on Rashid Minhas Road.

The suspect was presented before a Central Judicial Magistrate, where the investigation officer informed the court that the accused did not possess a valid heavy vehicle driving licence. He only held an LTV licence, which had expired in 2016.

Police said they need to question the driver to obtain information about the dumper truck’s owner.

The investigating officer said that after the accident, the violence of the people caused an injury to the accused’s eye. The case was registered in the Yousuf Plaza police station.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case handed over to the police on physical remand for two days.

The incident occurred a day earlier when a speeding dumper truck struck a motorcycle, killing a brother and sister and injuring their father. Following the accident, angry protesters set fire to seven dumper trucks.

Commenting on the incident in the Sindh Assembly, Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said action would be taken against the driver. However, he condemned the torching of dumper trucks after the accident, saying that “a few miscreants with a terrorist mindset” were responsible.

Memon vowed that those attempting to push the peaceful city towards violence would not be allowed to revive the politics of ethnicity.

He questioned, “Where in the world do people set vehicles on fire after traffic accidents?” adding that the burning of dumpers was a deliberate attempt to disturb the city’s peace. Memon asserted that the government would do its job and would not be intimidated by anyone.
