Gaza: Celebrated Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obaid, famously known as “The Pelé of Palestine”, has been killed in an Israeli attack while waiting in line for humanitarian aid. According to the Palestinian Football Federation, al-Obaid was standing in an aid queue when he was fatally shot.

Al-Obaid, a prolific striker who scored over 100 goals in his career, was widely regarded as one of Palestine’s greatest footballers. His unforgettable goal against Yemen in 2010 remains a highlight of his distinguished sporting journey.

The beloved athlete leaves behind a grieving family his wife and five children and a heartbroken sporting community. Tributes have poured in from across the Arab world and beyond, mourning the loss of a national icon.

Arab media reports that al-Obaid’s death brings the total number of athletes killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 to 662. Within the football community alone, 321 individuals including players, coaches, referees, administrators, and club officials have reportedly lost their lives.
