Islamabad: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert across the country in light of ongoing monsoon rains. While the recent downpours have provided much-needed relief from the scorching heat, they have also caused significant disruption in several cities due to prolonged power outages and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

All relevant departments have been directed to remain on high alert and prepared to respond to any emergency situations arising from the rains.

Cities including Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Kotri, Rahim Yar Khan, and Khanpur have experienced varying intensities of rainfall from scattered showers to heavy downpours accompanied by thunder and strong winds, making the weather more pleasant. However, the rain has also led to a complete breakdown in communication and power supply systems in several areas.

In Rahim Yar Khan, dozens of power feeders tripped due to the stormy weather, resulting in widespread electricity outages. Authorities have assured the public that power will be restored as soon as the weather conditions improve.

The situation is particularly critical in Harnai, where heavy rains in the surrounding hilly regions have raised serious concerns about potential flash floods. The district administration has advised residents to stay away from rivers and streams.

Power supply was cut off at the onset of the rain and has remained suspended for over two and a half hours, leaving residents to suffer in the heat and deal with a growing mosquito infestation. Citizens have appealed to K-Electric officials to take immediate notice of the situation and restore services promptly.

In response, PDMA has instructed all relevant agencies to stay vigilant and implement emergency measures wherever necessary. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas have been advised to exercise caution and to contact the Levies control room or local authorities in case of emergencies.

While the monsoon rains have brought welcome relief from the intense summer heat, they have also exposed the weaknesses in the country’s power infrastructure.
