Sialkot: A severe flood struck Sialkot and surrounding areas yesterday, causing widespread destruction at eight different locations and claiming the lives of 26 people.
The floodwaters of Nala Plakho swept away two individuals, while the breach of the Chenab river embankment led to the drowning of six people in Majra Kalan. Among the victims in Majra Kalan was a single family, including a couple and their children, who tragically lost their lives in the flood.
In Dogranwala, two youths drowned in the floodwaters of the nala, and one person died due to electric current in the floodwaters at Askari Town. Shani, who had gone to rescue relatives in Majra Kalan, also fell victim to the raging waters.
Due to the intensity of the flooding, flight operations at Sialkot International Airport have been temporarily suspended. The airport spokesperson issued an official NOTAM stating that flight operations will remain closed from 10 AM to 10 PM until the floodwaters are fully drained.
Sialkot administration has mobilized all available personnel and machinery to tackle the situation. Dewatering pumps and other resources are being used to ensure the timely removal of floodwater. The main terminal building, parking area, and runway of Sialkot Airport remain safe; however, floodwaters have breached the protective embankment on the southern side of the airport and entered the premises.
The spokesperson confirmed that all equipment is secure, and efforts to remove the floodwater with the help of machinery are ongoing.
