ISLAMABAD: Dr. Waqar Masood, a former federal minister and seasoned economist, passed away on Saturday. He was the paternal uncle of Pakistan national cricketer Shan Masood.

The news of his demise was confirmed by his brother Mansoor Khan, who stated that Dr. Waqar Masood’s funeral and burial will take place today after Maghrib prayers in Islamabad.

Dr. Waqar Masood held several key positions during his career, most notably serving multiple terms as Federal Secretary for Finance. He played a significant role in shaping Pakistan’s fiscal policies and contributed extensively to the country’s economic reforms.

Known for his integrity and professional excellence, Dr. Masood advised various governments on economic matters and held advisory roles in both civil and financial sectors.

Speaking to the media, his brother Mansoor Khan said:

“Dr. Waqar Masood dedicated his life to serving Pakistan. His passing is a profound loss for our family and for the nation.”

Following the news, tributes poured in from political, economic, and academic circles, recognizing Dr. Masood’s decades of service and his lasting impact on Pakistan’s financial governance. Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed their deep grief over the death of former caretaker federal minister, secretary finance and prominent economic expert Dr Waqar Masood.

The president, who is in China on a visit, also expressed condolence with the bereaved family, President Secretariat Press Wing said in a press release.

The prime minister prayed for the high ranks of the departed soul in Jannah and expressed condolence with the bereaved family, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

The prime minister, who is also in London, said that late Waqar Masood’s contributions to the government of Pakistan would be always remembered.
