Over 1,000 killed as landslide buries Sudanese Village in Darfur

KHARTOUM: A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rains in Sudan’s western Darfur region has buried an entire village, killing more than 1,000 people.

According to Arab media reports, claim was made by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), an armed group that controls parts of the region.

The organization stated that the landslide struck on Sunday in the Mara mountain range after days of torrential rainfall loosened the soil, causing the village to collapse under masses of earth and debris.

According to SLM/A, the destruction was so severe that only one survivor was pulled from the rubble, while the rest of the village was wiped out.

In its statement, the group said initial reports suggest that all residents of the village were killed and appealed to the United Nations and international relief organizations to urgently intervene to help recover bodies and provide humanitarian assistance.

The tragedy comes as Sudan enters the third year of a brutal civil war, with Darfur and other regions already facing widespread famine, displacement, and humanitarian crises.
