Paris: Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, was discovered dead in a luxury hotel room in Paris, officials confirmed.
French prosecutors reported that the 58-year-old diplomat was reported missing Monday evening after his wife received a concerning message in which he apologized and alluded to intentions of self-harm. His body was found the next morning by hotel security staff.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Mthethwa had reserved a room on the 22nd floor, where the window’s safety lock had been forcibly opened. Authorities found no signs of any physical struggle or evidence of drug use at the scene.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed profound sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the ambassador’s family.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Mthethwa had been appointed ambassador to France in December 2023 and previously held the positions of Minister of Police and Minister of Sport and Culture.
