Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the success or failure of intra-Afghan dialogue will depend on Afghan leadership adding that Pakistan cannot be held responsible for the failures of others.
FM Qureshi told the press conference that Pakistan has played a constructive role in Afghan Peace Process and will continue to do so.
“As US &NATO forces are nearing their withdrawal from Afghanistan, Pakistan is concerned at the increasing violence & lack of substantive progress in intra-Afghan negotiations. Pakistanis are also concerned at the reports of Human rights violations and urge to respect human rights & humanitarian laws,” the minister said.
Qureshi added, “Peace & stability in Afghanistan is a shared responsibility. Pakistan will play its role in promoting peace & stability in Afghanistan. The international community must also not shy away from its responsibilities and play its due role.”
He said “The peace process in Afghanistan is at a critical juncture. It is important that all energies must be focussed in finding an inclusive, broad-based & comprehensive political settlement through an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process.”
Pakistan played an instrumental role in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table. Pakistan facilitated the conclusion of US-Taliban Peace Agreement, the commencement of intra-Afghan negotiations and the Agreement on Rules & Procedures.”
The Foreign Minister said, “It is regrettable that despite being the closest neighbour, an imp. stakeholder in peace&stability in Afghanistan & as a country which has suffered the most after Afghanistan, Pakistan’s request to address the UNSC briefing on Afghanistan was not acceded to.”
