Pakistan reports record daily COVID death toll after four months

Pakistan on Wednesday reported more than 140 deaths in a single day after a gap of almost four months, showed the data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

The NCOC said that Pakistan lost 141 people to the pandemic taking the nationwide death toll to 25,220. Last time Pakistan reported more than 140 deaths was on May 3 when the country lost 161 people to the pandemic.

On the other hand, 61,410 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours out of which 4,199 returned positive. The new cases takes the nationwide positive cases to 1,135,858 while the positivity ratio stands at 6.84 per cent.
The number of people who have recovered from the coronavirus stands at 1,019,434 after 3,915 people recovered from the infection.

The data also showed that in the last 24 hours the number of people that have been completely vaccinated stands at 13,970,584.

Pakistan has been ramping up its vaccination drive and has introduced a number of measures to push people to get themselves vaccinated.

A day earlier, Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar, who also head the NCOC, had announced that those citizens who have not been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus will not be barred from using public transport from October 15.

In a press conference, Umar had also announced that only vaccinated people will be allowed to travel by air from September 30. He had also said that citizens working in schools, transportation have also been given the same deadline to get vaccinated.
