Dua Zehra case: Court seeks replies on changing IO

KARACHI: A sessions court on Wednesday heard a plea by teenage girl Dua Zehra’s father seeking to replace the investigating officer in the case.

During the hearing, the court issued notices to Additional Inspector General (Investigation), Senior Superintendent Police (SSP-Investigation East) and the case investigating officer. The court has asked them to submit their replies before the next hearing.

Mehdi Kazmi had filed a petition in Session and District Court through lawyer Jibran Nasir to replace the investigating officer in the alleged kidnapping case of his daughter.

The complainant said the present investigation officer’s behaviour seems biased and the family has no trust over him.

He also expressed concern that the investigation officer will not produce Dua Zehra for the check-up to determine her age. He pleaded the court to change the investigation officer with a qualified officer.

Mehdi Kazmi had filed a plea on June 17 with Inspector General Sindh and Additional IGP (Investigation) seeking to replace the investigating officer in the case.

The development comes after the Sindh Health Department formed a medical board to determine the age of Dua Zehra. The girl is expected to present before the board for check-up.

Judicial Magistrate East had ordered further investigation of the case and constituted a medical board to determine the actual age of the girl.

During her court appearance, Dua Zehra claimed she was 18 years of age while a medical test ordered by the Sindh High Court determined she was aged around 17. Her parents claim she is aged 14 and thus the marriage is illegal as per Sindh’s laws.

The health department informed local court about the formation of a five-member medical board headed by Dow Medical College Principal Saba Sohail to ascertain the real age of teenage girl.

The court was informed that Medical Superintendent Services Hospital, Police surgeon and medical experts from Civil Hospital will be part of the medical board. The board’s head has asked the court issue orders to present Dua Zehra for medical checkup.
