KARACHI: Police on Wednesday failed to present teenage girl Dua Zehra before a medical board formed to determine her age.
A meeting of the medical board was held at the Sindh Services Hospital where all members of the panel including chairperson Prof Saba Sohail, who is also Principal Dow Medical College, were present. Lawyer and social activist Jibran Nasir and the case investigation officer were also present.
However, police failed to present Dua Zehra before the medical board. Police sought more time to present the girl before the medical board as she is currently in Lahore.
MS Services Hospital and civil surgeon Dr Zubair Agha said police have informed the medical board and it will be up to the police when the girl is brought to Karachi. He said the medical board will hold its meeting the next day after the girl is brought to the city.
Sindh Health Department has formed 10-member medical board – considered the largest ever – to determine the age of teenage girl Dua Zehra. The board consists of private and government doctors from various departments.
According to a notification shared by lawyer Jibran Nasir, the medical board consists of experts from radiology, gynecology, dentistry and forensics.
The board will be chaired by Dow Medical College Principal Prof Saba Sohail. The board consists of Medical Superintendent Services Hospital Dr Zubair Agha and police surgeon Dr Summiya Syed along with experts from different departments.
The board will then present a report in the Sindh High Court. Judicial Magistrate East had ordered further investigation of the case and constituted a medical board to determine the actual age of the girl.
During her court appearance, Dua Zehra claimed she was 18 years of age while a medical test ordered by the Sindh High Court determined she was aged around 17. Her parents claim she is aged 14 and thus the marriage is illegal as per Sindh’s laws.
