KP authorities review flood situation in Charsadda

KP authorities review flood situation in Charsadda

Charsadda was under high risk of flood floods.

CHARSADDA: Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Shahzad Bangash on Saturday visited Charsadda after the city was threatened by flash floods.

Corp Commander Peshawar and KP Finance Minister Taimur Jhagra was also present on the occasion.  After reviewing the situation, the chief secretary said major floods have passed and now relief activities are ongoing.

He said according to the weather forecast, if there is no further rainfall in mountainous areas, there will not be a high risk of flooding.

He said Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has allocated his helicopter for rescue operations while Pakistan Army helicopters are also engaged in the affected districts.

He said Rescue 1122 and Pakistan Army personnel are rescuing the victims through boats and food and medical facilities are being provided in relief camps for flood victims.

He said Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has allocated a special fund for relief of flood victims. He said the flood damages will be estimated after the rescue operation.

It must be mentioned that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has dedicated two helicopters for flood relief activities. KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan said that both helicopters will be used for relief activities by the district administration for dealing with emergency situations.

The authorities have also established control rooms in the flood-hit districts which will be connected to the central control room. The local MPAs have been appointed as the focal persons for each district.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Flood Forecasting Division cautioned that Nowshera region near the Kabul River was at risk of high-level flood.

The cell further warned that the water level was continuously rising and water flow of 315,000 cusecs was recorded with very high flood level.

Charsadda was at risk of flash floods in Swat and Lower Dir swept away the Munda Headworks bridge as local authorities advised the people to take precautionary measures

The Munda Headworks bridge collapsed due to flood water pressure, and disconnected Tehsil Shabqadar and Prang from the district.

Residents were advised to evacuate to government-provided camps. No loss of life was reported but houses and agricultural land have been destroyed due to the flow of water.

Deputy Commissioner Charsadda issued a warning of flooding and appealed to the residents to leave their houses and move to a safe place but people did not take the warning seriously. The deputy commissioner said the Munda Headworks remained safe in 2010 floods.
